Mayyazhi, increasingly spelled Mahé, is a small town at the mouth of the Mahé River and is surrounded on all sides by the State of Kerala. The Kannur District surrounds Mahé on three sides and Kozhikode District from one side. In fact, geographically Mahé District is part of North Malabar.
Formerly part of French India, Mahé now forms a municipality in Mahé district, one of the four districts of the Union Territory of Puducherry. Mahé has one member (MLA) in the Puducherry Legislative Assembly.

It is the sixth least populous district in the country (out of 640). Mahe, along the coast of Arabian sea is a quiet and lovely minor entity of Pondicherry. Place has great historical inheritance which was under French rule till 1954. Mahe has got poetic essence due to its brevity and serenity where Mahe River meets Arabian Sea.
